Zechariah brings a message of hope to the returned remnant in Jerusalem; and he, like Haggai, urges upon them the rebuilding of the Temple: Not by might, nor by power, but my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.4:6
Zechariah says to the children of Israel: Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Turn ye unto me . . . and I will turn unto you. . . .1:3
Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying . . . Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me. . . .
Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever? But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold? . . .1:4–6
I have spread you abroad as the four winds of heaven, saith the Lord.2:6
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion. . . . Behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass. . . .9:9
Turn you to the stronghold, ye prisoners of hope.9:12
One shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.13:6
And the Lord shall be King over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.14:9
