The first Epistle of Paul to Timothy, his friend and fellow-worker, at Ephesus:
This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.1:15
This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach; not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; one that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (for if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)3:1–5
Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.6:6–7
The love of money is the root of all evil.6:10
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life. . . .6:12
O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called; which some professing have erred concerning the faith.6:20–21
