The First Epistle General of Peter was, it is thought probable, written in Rome. It is addressed to his fellow-believers dispersed over the world:
See that ye love another with a pure heart fervently:
For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever.1:22–25
Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.2:9
Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.2:11
Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.2:17
For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.2:20
The end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.4:7–8
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.5:8
