my spotting telescope, because he was quite a way off. This
is where I found out that binoculars will only magnify so
far; sometimes you need the extra reach. If you're watching
birds through a scope, there's a neat trick where you can
hold up a compact digital camera to the eyepiece of the
scope and take a picture. It's called 'digi scoping', but I find
this a bit of a fiddle. You can actually get a good result just
with your phone. Turn on the phone's camera, hold it up to
the eyepiece, and with a steady hand, you can take a pretty
decent photo of the magnified image. It might not win any
awards, but it's handy for identification. And remember to
switch to flight mode.
