Planning Ahead for Big Feelings—PLAN

For You to Know

Worrying about things not going well is like practicing or rehearsing for things not to go well. That becomes all we know, and we might end up doing what we had practiced in our mind. When we plan for coping well, it becomes easier to make that happen.

When you imagine a situation that starts a big feeling for you, do you think of it going well or not going so well? Most people notice thoughts about the situation not going so well. This is normal, but it also tends to make our big feelings get even bigger. Think about all of the skills you have learned in this workbook so far. What skills might help you get through a situation without any big feelings getting in the way? The PLAN acronym can help you with this.Don’t Let Your Emotions Run Your Life for Kids
