Activity 35

Your Superhero and Superpower

For You to Know

Your imagination can be an amazing tool! Imagining that you have a superpower might not turn you into a real-life superhero, but it can help you feel more powerful and more in control.

For this activity you are going to imagine that you are a feelings superhero. You can be any kind of feelings superhero that you want. The trick is, your feelings superhero self needs to be completely in control of your feelings.

Some feelings superheroes can do amazing things. For instance, Super Sammy has a sad-zapper that can zap mean words so they can’t hurt him so much. When someone says mean things to Sammy, things that might make his sadness really big, Super Sammy’s sad-zapper comes out and zaps those hurtful words so they cannot get to Sammy.

Invincible Isaac is another feelings superhero. Invincible Isaac has a special invisible protection bubble that protects him when there is a strong storm. Isaac used to have a really big feeling of fear when there was a thunderstorm, but now Invincible Isaac comes out to save the day every time a storm approaches. By popping up his invisible protection bubble at the first sound of thunder, Invincible Isaac is able to remember that he is safe from the storm. The storm can’t get past the protection bubble. It’s pretty amazing!

Caitlyn Cool is a feelings superhero, too. Caitlyn Cool reminds Caitlyn how to take deep, slow breaths to get calm and cool when something makes her feel really angry. Caitlyn Cool has supercool sunglasses and a supershady umbrella that blocks out anger. When anger gets big, it is like a really hot sunny day. If Caitlyn hangs out in the shade of Caitlyn Cool’s umbrella with her supersunglasses on, she can still notice that it is sunny, but she won’t get too hot and the sun cannot burn her. With anger, like the sun, sometimes it helps to have a “shady” place to take a break so you do not get “too hot” or do something that gets you in trouble.A DBT-Based Skills Workbook to Help Children Manage Mood Swings, Control Angry Outbursts, and Get Along with Others
