At sea

I was the overnight duty controller, which meant that I was to give the 0440 brief this morning. I crawled into bed last night shortly after ten, but I just could not seem to get off to sleep, so about one o’clock I got dressed and spent the rest for the night in the Air Office, catching up on my mail as well as sundry other routine tasks rather more directly connected with work.

The briefing was hardly worth waiting up for, as I said exactly four words – ‘AIDS serviceable, standard frequencies’ – but I suppose I was there to answer any questions that might have been asked. There weren’t any, of course. After controlling the morning HDS aircraft for a full five minutes just after seven, I retired to bed, finally surfacing in time for lunch.

I watched the ITV film in the afternoon, which was ‘Dirty Harry,’ starring Clint Eastwood, and just as entertaining as I remembered it from the last time I’d seen it. Flying had once again effectively ceased, so I spent the evening in the Air Office catching up with some of the paperwork that I have been neglecting.
