S O U R C E   G U I D E

This source guide is in three parts. Listed first is a compendium of holistic resources. What follows is a listing of veterinarians with whom I’ve interacted or have become familiar. The third section lists the manufacturers whose products I use in my practice.

As any reader of the preceding pages knows, many of the products I administer are packaged for humans and readily available at health food stores. Several of those products, however, are available only to licensed practitioners through distributors. I’ve mentioned these products throughout the book to be forthcoming about what I use, and I offer the following list of manufacturers in the same spirit. Please do not call or write those manufacturers who, as noted, sell only to practitioners or wholesale. Instead, show the source guide to your veterinarian, and let him or her use it as needed.

Since my full-time job is veterinarian, not product sampler, there may be other manufacturers whose holistic products are first-rate but are not listed here, simply because I haven’t heard of them or haven’t had a chance to try them yet. Please don’t assume that a manufacturer omitted is necessarily inferior to those on the list. Ask around, get second opinions—and if you’re impressed with the results, let me know!

Alternative Solutions to Animal Health, Inc., is the nonprofit foundation that I founded. Some of the goals of this corporate endeavor are to investigate and compile all of the data accrued over twenty-five years of alternative veterinary practice into retrospective studies to be published in referred veterinary journals; to conduct prospective scientific veterinary research for the purpose of preventing, controlling, remediating, and, indeed, even “curing” cancer and other chronic degenerative diseases using holistic treatment modalities; and to disseminate this information for the purpose of educating and informing both veterinarians and laypersons alike about the efficacy of cancer treatment strategies that minimize the use of drugs and other widely used toxic treatment methods. Furthermore, the foundation would like to conduct a certain percentage of pro bono cases, such that viable non-toxic therapies can be made available to cancer patients whose owners could otherwise not afford them. All donations are gratefully acknowledged.

The following is a listing of the holistic veterinarians with whom I’ve interacted or have become familiar. It is not intended to show favoritism.

There are many more highly trained and experienced consultants, but a complete listing would stagger this section.

A more comprehensive list is available from the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association.

Arrowroot Standard Direct 83 East Lancaster Avenue Paoli, PA 19301 (800) 234-8879

Arrow Direct is a wholesale distributor for Standard Homeopathic, Inc. (210 West 131st Street, Los Angeles, CA 90061; [800] 624-9659). Large health food stores and pharmacies order from Standard Homeopathic; doctors and veterinarians order from Arrow Direct (which accepts no retail orders). From Arrow I get our supplies of Homeopet, the line of thirteen complex homeopathic remedies for diarrhea, vomiting, skin irritations, etc. In addition, Arrow has a wide array of vitamins, herbs, and nutraceuticals.

Bayside Quality Products
315 Franklin Avenue
Valley Stream, NY 11010
(888) 724-5489

Bayside sells English flower essences for people and pets. Specifically for animals, it also sells Homeopet.

Bio-Active Nutritional, Inc.

1803 N. Wickham Road, Suite 6

Melbourne, FL 32935

(800) 288-9525

Bio-Active offers botanicals, homeopathics, and nutritionals for both people and pets, but sells only to licensed practitioners and to certain health food stores run by pharmacists (where, due to their potency, Bio-Active products must be displayed within locked cases). Bio-Active has more than fifty botanicals, extracted from herbs, which range from apizelen, a German herbal complex used to help the body fight cancer, to vermaplex, which combats parasites, including tapeworm and roundworm, and is also used for constipation and intestinal problems. It has hundreds of homeopathic combinations, as well as some pure homeopathics. Among its best-selling nutritionals are Bio-Metabolic Balancer, a source of vitamin B, and Bone Developer, for pets with fractures and calcium problems.

Bioglan Animal Products
20481 Crescent Bay Drive
Lake Forest, CA 92630
(800) 888-0171

Bioglan sells only to distributors, but readers are welcome to call its 800 number to be directed to nearby stores that carry its products. In addition to products for healthy skin and coat, Bioglan has remedies for hip and joint pain; a medicine for hot spots; digestive supplements; and various shampoos.

Biotherapies, Inc.
9 Commerce Road
Fairfield, NJ 07004
(800) 700-7325

Biotherapies offers a wide array of natural dietary supplements, for people and pets, both wholesale and retail. The product I use most often is Cartivet, a shark cartilage product that I’ve found to be helpful in the treatment of cancer and arthritis.

Biovet, Biotec, and Biomed
940 Royal Street, Suite 309
New Orleans, LA 70116
(888) 468-7999

Biovet has been a pioneer in the application of the age-and disease-retarding antioxidant known as superoxide dismutase (SOD), both for people and pets. My favorite is AOX/PLX, which is particularly helpful with arthritis. Biovet also has a line of combination antioxidants called “Canine Support” and “Feline Support.” Its new specialty is substances that repair misshapen red blood cells in just hours or a day or two, a boon in the treatment of damaged internal organs, especially the liver.

Botanical Laboratories, Inc.
1441 West Smith Road
Ferndale, WA 98248
(800) 232-4005

Complimed is a homeopathic line of remedies both for people and pets. It’s strong enough to be FDA regulated, and is sold through prescription. Along with a number of products for general pet problems—arthritis, cold and flu, trauma—I use Quietiva for stress; Thyroid for thyroid problems; Asthmica for asthma, and Gastrica for gastrointestinal problems. Botanical Laboratories also carries an over-the-counter line of homeopathics called Natra-Bio. Though not as concentrated as Complimed, it’s often just as effective, and I use a lot of it, especially Bladder Irritation, Teeth and Gums, and Head Cold.

Crystal Star Herbal Nutrition
4069 Wedge Way Court
Earth City, MO 63045
(800) 736-6015

Crystal Star offers whole-herb combination remedies, as opposed to the more traditional single-herb approach. Both for people and pets, it basically has a ready-made herbal remedy for every ailment. Among my favorites are AR-Ease, for arthritis, and Tinkle Caps, for urinary problems. Both wholesale and retail orders can be placed at the above number.

Dolisos
3014 Rigel Avenue
Las Vegas, NV 89102
(800) 365-4767

Dolisos has refined and distributed homeopathic medicines since its founding in France in 1937 by a pharmacist named Jean Tetau. Still based in France, the company produces tens of millions of preparations for subsidiaries all over the world. One we use a lot is thuja. Then there’s silicea, which is nutritional support and chronic suppuration. But Dolisos also manufactures many other homeopathic single remedies. Some are available only to licensed practitioners, but thuja and silicea are available over the counter.

Dr. Goodpet
P.O. Box 4547
Inglewood, CA 90309
(800) 222-9932

Dr. Goodpet carries vitamins, enzymes, homeopathics, shampoos—anything for pets’ health and well-being. I use many of the products in their homeopathic line: Flea Relief, Diar-Relief, and Calm Stress. Both wholesale and retail orders may be placed at the above number.

Doctors Mutual Service, Inc.
18722 Santee Lane
Valley Center, CA 92082
(800) 952-9568

Doctors Mutual offers a wide array of glandulars, enzymes, anti-inflamatory Betathyme, and Mega-lipotropic, which contains L-carnotine and promotes weight loss. To veterinarians, it also sells a lot of Serene, a calmant; Propolis, the beehive coating that works as a natural penicillin; and Colostrex (from colostrum), which helps build immunity and is helpful for diarrhea.

Earth Animal
606 Post Road East
Westport, CT 06880
(800) 622-0260

Earth Animal’s exclusive products are available at its retail store (above), as well as through mail order.

John Ewing Company
www.earthanimal.com
P.O. Box 188
La Salle, CO 80645
(800) 525-8601

Ewing carries nutritional supplements for horses, dogs, cats, and humans. The one I use is MSM, which is a DMSO derivative that has an aspirin-like effect for pains and inflammation, especially for the joints. Both wholesale and retail orders may be placed at the above number.

Halo, Purely for Pets®

Palm Harbor, FL 34685

Halo distributes Anitra’s Vita-Mineral Mix, a dietary powder that helps support bones, teeth, joints, and ligaments; calms nervous pets; helps eliminate shedding, dandruff, and greasy coat syndrome; and provides all the water-soluble vitamins missing from processed foods. Mixed in with a pet’s regular food, it’s also a tasty supplement. Anitra’s Herbal Eyewash, available through Halo, is the most useful cleanser I’ve found to flush out irritants and rinse reddened eyes; I’ve also used it medicinally, for ulcerations of the eye. Dream Coat, one of Halo’s best-sellers, is a liquid blend of oils that helps stop shedding, itching, scratching, dandruff, and dry skin. All these products, along with other supplements and herbal grooming aids, may be ordered from the above number.

Heel, Inc.
11600 Cochiti SE
Albuquerque, NM 87123-3376
(800) 621-7644

In 1936, German physician Dr. Hans-Heinrich Reckeweg created the first of his Heel homeopathic complex remedies. In 1979, having moved to the U.S., he created a second line, BHI. Since his death in 1985, the Heel company has carried on his work, and is regarded as one of the most distinguished producers of homeopathic remedies today. Among the dozens of Heel products, the best-seller is Traumeel, well known as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic. BHI’s products are also homeopathic combinations, designed to address the parts of the body for which they’re named: Sinus, Allergy, Stomach, Headache, and so forth. Heel sells only to licensed practitioners and distributors; if you can’t find their products at your local health food store, consult a holistic veterinarian.

Institute for Traditional Medicine
2017 Southeast Hawthorne
Portland, OR, 97214
(800) 544-7504

The institute sells (and in some cases formulates) Chinese herbs for both people and pets, including Seven Forests. It prefers to sell to practitioners (who can buy the herbs wholesale), especially those who are already schooled in the properties of their products. Among the products often ordered for pets by holistic veterinarians are Omphalia II, a good parasite fighter; Drynaria, for arthritis; and Akebia for kidney problems. The institute also has several herbs useful in combating cancer.

Lucas Meyer, Inc.
P.O. Box 3218
Decatur, IL 62524
(217) 875-3660

Lucas Meyer is a supplier of the natural, fat-like substance called Phosphatidylserine (PS), which is used in many supplements for both people and pets. PS was first extracted in the mid-1980s to combat Alzheimer’s disease. Since then, it has been recognized as having broader implications in the promotion of health and the reduction of stress. Lucas Meyer’s PS is actually manufactured from soybean lecithin; administered to pets as a supplement called Pet-PS, it’s been observed to be an aid not only in cognitive problems (i.e., the mental confusion of advancing age) but joint problems, coat and skin conditioning, and wound healing. Though Lucas Meyer is only a raw supplier, it can advise readers how to find Pet-PS at stores in their area.

Idaho Falls, ID 83402
(800) 282-3000

For pets, Melaleuca offers ProCare nutritional treats, herbal shampoos, and a coat lusterizer. A number of the products Melaleuca produces for people, however, are excellent for pets. The product we use most is tea tree oil (the scientific name is … melaleuca!), from the Australian tea tree; it’s used as an antiseptic for ringworm or fungi, but also appears in their tea tree shampoo. Both wholesale and retail orders may be placed at the above number.

Miller Pharmacal Group, Inc.
350 Randy Road, Unit 2
Carol Stream, IL 60188
(800) 323-2935

Miller, which sells mainly to doctors, is one of my principal sources of animal glandulars. A staple of my practice is Mil Adrene, a raw adrenal glandular. Miller also has glandulars for the liver, heart, kidney, and stomach, among others. For the most part, these are “straight” glandulars, which is to say that no vitamins or minerals have been mixed into them. Sometimes the vitamins and minerals can help, but in other cases, the “straight” stuff is best.

Specifically for pets, Nu Biologics carries a product called Eco-VM (Imhotep), a topical spray from grapefruit seed extract for general irritation and first-aid needs; Eco-VM Ear Care, a cleanser; and Seed-A-Sept, another grapefruit seed extract good for soaking inflamed ears. It also carries Progressive Labs, which has a thyroid supplement called Tri-40, GSC, a glandular for stress complex, and Adrenal Chelate, for adrenal support. Both wholesale and retail orders may be placed at the above number.

Nutramax has three important veterinary products, all created at its own laboratories and available only to licensed practitioners. The first is Cosequin, which stimulates the production of cartilage cells, and so is useful for stiff joints and arthritis; I think it’s the best supplement available for arthritis.

Quantum Herbal Products Ltd.
20 DeWitt Drive
Saugerties, NY 12477
(800) 348-0398 or (914) 246-1344

Most of Quantum’s products are intended for people, but they help animals, too. For pets in particular, Quantum makes a very effective and utterly nontoxic spray concentrate for fleas and ticks called, logically enough, 100% Natural Flea & Tick Repellant. Its primary ingredients are oils of erigeron, cajeput, and rose geranium, but it also contains concentrates of St. John’s Wort, wormwood, black walnut, neem, and rue. I order it by the caseload. Quantum also makes Pet Salve, a topical salve for hot spots and other skin irritations, which stops pets from licking. Though Quantum sells mostly wholesale to health food stores, it does do mail-order business with customers who don’t live near a retail outlet that stocks its products. Orders and requests for product brochures may be made at the above number.

Similasan Homeopathic Remedies
1321 South Central, Suite D
Kent, WA 98032
(800) 426-1644

Similasan Homeopathic is the U.S. distributor for about a dozen of the hundred remedies for both people and pets produced by its Swiss parent company. Its Similasan #1 eyedrops alleviate red, dry eyes; its #2 eyedrop formula is designed for eye symptoms brought on by allergies. I’m also fond of Similasan’s homeopathic nasal spray and three different homeopathic cough remedies for different cough symptoms. Though it sells directly only to practitioners, health food stores, and pharmacies, it will mail catalogs upon request and steer customers to nearby outlets that stock its products.

Standard Process Labs
P.O. Box 904
1200 West Royal Lee Drive
Palmyra, WI 53156
(800) 558-8740

Standard is the company that set the standard; it is the original distributor of glandulars formulated by Dr. Royal Lee in the late 1920s. Most of Standard’s products are still designed for people, but an increasing number of veterinarians are using them. I order pure glandulars from Standard such as Drenatrophin (raw adrenal concentrate), and Pancreatrophin (raw pancreas), as well as Neurotrophin for epilepsy and brain tumors. Standard also carries whole-food vitamin and mineral products that include glandulars. (Dr. Lee felt that to be effective, whole-food nutrients need vitamins, minerals, and proteins; the glandulars supply the protein.) There are specific formulations for ailments, and others for replenishing the body’s nutrient storehouses. One of the most popular choices among Standard’s 140 products is Immuplex, for supporting the immune system. Standard Process sells only to licensed practitioners.

Vetri-Science Laboratories
20 New England Drive
Essex Junction, VT 05453-1504
(800) 882-9993

Vetri-Science’s best-selling product is Glyco-Flex, concocted from the green-lipped mussel, which contains glycosaminoglycans (including chondroitin sulfates) to help restore connective tissue. (It’s similar to Cosequin.) I’ve used it particularly to treat arthritis and hip dysplasia, as well as torn cartilage, in dogs. Glyco-Flex also helps reduce inflammation. Vetri-Science has two other joint therapy products: Vetri-Disc (used in the treatment of spondylosis deformans); and Glucosamine (single-source and multisource), which supplies cats with needed minerals (and is essentially Cosequin at a less expensive cost). It also sells a product called Acetylator, good for treatment of inflammatory bowel disease; anti-oxidants; and various vitamins, chiefly Canine Plus and Nu-Cat. All of Vetri-Science’s products are available only to licensed practitioners.

4914 Del Ray Avenue
Bethesda, MD 20814

Washington Homeopathic distributes a sizable line of homeopathic products. At Smith Ridge, we use a nosode for squamous cell carcinoma, and another for feline fibrosarcoma. (The nosodes are available only to licensed practitioners; the rest of Washington Homeopathic’s products are generally available.) But for pets specifically, the company also manufactures Homeopet, a line of remedies for arthritis, anxiety, and the skin; Noah’s Kingdom, a line that includes Aller-Ease, Scratch Free, Arth-Ease, and Calms Pet; and Equio Pathic, a line that includes Hoof, Preperformance Stress, and Dewormer.
