This pie is fun to make and eat.
1½ cups flour
1½ teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
½ cup oil
2 tablespoons cold milk
6 cups peeled and sliced apples (Rome Beauty are excellent)
½ cup sugar
2 tablespoons flour
½ teaspoon nutmeg
½ teaspoon cinnamon
½ cup sugar
½ cup flour
½ cup butter
To make a crust, mix the 1½ cups flour, the 1½ teaspoons sugar, salt, oil, and milk with a fork until well blended. Press into a greased, 10-inch glass pie plate. In a large bowl toss apples with the ½ cup sugar, the 2 tablespoons flour, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Mound apple filling into crust-lined pan. Prepare topping by combining the other ½ cup sugar, the ½ cup flour, and butter until the mixture resembles the consistency of cornmeal. Sprinkle over apples. Place in medium-sized brown bag, folding over edges. Oven must be completely preheated to avoid burning the bag. Bake at 350° F for 1½ hours. Do not open oven during cooking. Makes 6 to 8 servings.
