A Note on History –

image

THE FINAL BOOK IN MY Glen Highland Romance series, sigh.

It was with nostalgic pain that I wrote those last few chapters.  In those chapters, we go back to all of the books in the series, touching on them in some way, and brining the harrowing events of book 1, 2, and 3 to what I think is a beautiful close. Forgiveness is hard, and especially for Declan and Elayne, they also learn that you cannot forgive a person on behalf of someone else. Alistair better stay far from Declan for the rest of my imagination.

As usual, though I try to retain historical elements as much as possible, such as Robert the Bruce’s army advancing and the clansmen flocking to his banner when they could, I do change elements as necessary to move the story. Though this is set in the middle ages, there is still brief mention of kilts (to help setting and just because I love the idea of all Highlanders in kilts!). Some things that actually happened?  The Douglas Larder, James Douglas becoming a military strategist and right hand man to Robert, and the death of King Edward I of England in July of 1307.

This book focuses on more of the movements of Robert the Bruce and of the clans that joined him as he began his military movements full force, but the focus on James Douglas was something I’d been wanting to write for a long time. He’s such an enigmatic character, and when I read about the Douglas Larder, I had to write a story about him.

I do hope the history seems as real for you as it does for me, regardless of any of the changes I made. And if there are any mistakes in the history, or from the first book to this one, those are completely mine – reconstructed for creative licensing, of course!

Thank you for reading this entire series. If you loved it, go back in time to Ancient Scotland (Alba) and give my Celtic Highland Maidens series a try. Then, look for a new Scottish Highlands series next year, focusing on the clan
