The information is provided for educational and informational purposes only. Translations are based on Standard Spanish. Standard Spanish or Neutral Spanish is considered a correct, educated standard for the Spanish language.

This book is not intended to teach you how to speak Spanish. It is intended to help Spanish speakers identify appropriate (and sometimes, approximate) Spanish equivalents for American legal terms. As a result, we have omitted:

• the Spanish equivalent of “the” at the beginning of all words and phrases (el, la, los, las)
• the Spanish equivalent of “a” at the beginning of all words and phrases (un, una, unos, unas)
• the “de” at the beginning or end of all words and phrases (meaning of, from, or by)
• the designation of nouns as male or female, and with a few exceptions, the male or female alternatives for the terms used (novio for novia, etc.)
