Author Note
Gold was discovered in Helena, Montana, in 1864, and for the next three decades it was a town flush with wealth and those looking for power. For a brief time, the town boasted more millionaires per capita than any other place in the world. This is the main reason I chose it as the setting for my Outlaws of the Wild West series. I loved the idea of such opulence set against the backdrop of a rough and sometimes lawless territory.
In researching the town, I came across a couple of prominent women who helped lay the groundwork for the character of Glory Winters. Josephine “Chicago Joe” Hensley was one of the wealthiest people in Helena. She owned a brothel, a saloon and a variety theater, along with other commercial investments. Mollie “Crazy Belle Crafton” Byrnes owned a famous brothel known as “the castle.” She and the women who lived there were quite charitable, contributing to those in need at Christmas.
I hope you enjoy getting to know Glory and Zane. I absolutely loved writing their story. Please visit my website, harperstgeorge.com, to sign up for my newsletter for sneak peeks and contests.
