47 Dodge food traps at airports.

Eateries in airports are turning up faster than you can say “supersize.” On a recent trip, I noticed I never had to walk more than twenty or thirty steps (which burns about 4 calories) to get from a Burger King to a Sbarro to a Starbucks.

Here’s what I do to avoid temptation:

image Bring food with you in your snack kit.

image If you’re on layover and hungry, create a healthier salad by tossing out the croutons and cheese and ordering the low-fat dressing. As for a takeout burrito (which, on average, packs 600 calories), order it without the cheese and sour cream.

CALORIES SAVED: 175.

image Choose low-cal snacks such as:

Nonfat soft-serve frozen yogurt, regular

Smoothies

Fresh fruits

Fruit cups

Natural fruit juices

image Turn the airport into a gym. Take a fast walk around the concourse.

CALORIES BURNED: UP TO 200.

image Avoid airline food. It’s loaded with hidden calories, even though portions are small. A smoked turkey and cheese sandwich with chips and a cookie packs up to 950 calories and 50 grams of fat.

CALORIES SAVED: UP TO 1,000.

image Drink plenty of water. The humidity in an airplane is only about 2 percent, which leads to dehydration, fatigue, and jet lag. Drinking water also tames hunger pangs.
