27. LAKE MINNEWANKA
One of the Canadian Rockies’ most popular lakes. The area has lots of amenities and options to hike and explore.
LOCATION
Drive west on Highway 1 and take the Lake Minnewanka turnoff (Exit 69). Follow the signs to the Lake Minnewanka parking lot. Note that during high-traffic volume, a free shuttle to the lake is offered. To get to the shuttle parking lot, from just past the Lake Minnewanka turnoff, turn right towards Johnson Lake and look for the signed and large parking lot about 1 km along the road on the right.
DISTANCE
1.2 to2.8 km return
ELEVATION GAIN
50 m
DIFFICULTY
Easy along the trail, moderate along the lakeshore, and recommended for all. Excellent paved trail for a first 600 m and then a good mud trail to Stewart Canyon, and/ or rocky and scrambly terrain near the lakeshore.
SEASON
Late spring, summer and early fall.
OF SPECIAL INTEREST FOR CHILDREN
The kids might like the fact that boat rentals and boat trips across the lake are available. They also might be interested in the availability of ice cream and other food items. Remember to yield right of way to cyclists and horses.
1.From the parking lot, walk down to the lake and follow the path that parallels the shoreline for 600 m to the signed Stewart Canyon trailhead. Alternatively (recommended), from the lake, follow one of the mud trails near the lakeshore. Scrambling the rocks near the water can be heaps of fun for the kids, but use discretion. A couple of small peninsulas provide great enjoyment for all. Stay near the water until you reach a pier, and then make your way onto Stewart Canyon Trail.
2.From the signed trailhead continue along the mud trail for 800 m to the bridge that spans Stewart Canyon. Travel beyond this point is not recommended. The trail that parallels Stewart Creek going upstream offers little in terms of interest, so I only recommend taking that trail if you need more exercise. Return the same way you came in.
The rocky shoreline of the lake provides great views and fun scrambling.
Keira Collins and her dad Simon Collins reaping the rewards of the scrambly, lakeside route.
Kayaking around the lake is a great way to experience it from another perspective.
