OWL

owl

Currently, there are more than two hundred different species of owl that can be found in many types of habitats. Owls have held a variety of symbolic roles, ranging from misfortune and death to prosperity. An interesting fact is that a group of owls is called a parliament.

Key Attributes

Deep wisdom and intuitive knowledge, high intelligence, inspiration, independence, introspection, exploration of the unknown, dignity, authority, leadership, confidence, and secrecy.

Chakra Interpretations

Root

Most species of owl live a solitary life and are highly adaptable to different environments and changes. Some owls are very territorial and will fight other owls to defend a claim to their chosen location. Most likely, you can live pretty much anywhere alone, and it could be that you defend your home or your desire to be alone quite adamantly. One possible caution about the owl in this chakra is that it usually swallows its food whole. It could be that you aren’t very careful about your diet. You might even tend to eat too fast, which ends up giving you digestive issues. If this is the case for you, take a tip from owl’s patience and slow down so you enjoy your food and maybe don’t feel ill afterward.

Sacral

Most owls are nocturnal, which says that you prefer to work the night shift or at the very least do your best work after the sun goes down. As far as creative pursuits go, nighttime is when your creativity is at its best, provided you can work in seclusion. An interesting fact about owls is that in most species the female owl is about 25 percent larger than males. Regardless of your actual gender, in your relationship the more feminine half of your partnership might be taller or physically bigger than the more masculine half.

Solar Plexus

With most owls, their coloring and texture tend to mimic their surroundings, allowing them to blend in with the environment, making them nearly invisible. If you so choose, you can be present without being seen. Owls are masters of patience. They watch and wait for the perfect moment before taking any action. You have honed your instincts to razor sharpness and act only when the time is right. Nighttime is when most creatures find shelter because they can’t see, but this is the owl’s best time. It could be that you are the kind of person who can take what to most people is a disadvantage and turn it into an advantage. The owl preens as soon as it wakes up and will continue to do so throughout the day. If you connect with this feature of the owl, it might take you a long time to get out the door to go anywhere because you probably change your mind about what you are wearing several times or just can’t stop tweaking how you look and feel like you need to do “touch-ups” all through the day

Heart

Most owl species are solitary, but a few do mate for life, and which owl you connect to will depend on your life choice. If you are happy living alone but would still like to have companionship, connect with the great horned owl. It stays with one partner, but the pair doesn’t nest together. If your desire is to have an affectionate and loving relationship, connect with the barn owl. Barn owls not only nest together, but they also become emotionally attached to their partner and are very cuddly with each other. In fact, barn owls have occasionally been known to die from grief if their mate dies. If remaining solitary is more to your liking, it could be that your heart is devoted to the expansion of knowledge, and very likely this exploration involves things that fall in the realm of the mysterious.

Throat

Other than perhaps the howl of a wolf or coyote, very few noises typify night like the hoot of an owl. Owls are usually silent except when claiming territory or calling to a mate or their chicks. Most likely, you only speak when necessary, for a good reason, and usually with wisdom. An interesting fact is that several species of owl have asymmetrical ears, which means they are positioned at different heights on the owl’s head, allowing the owl to pinpoint the location of its prey due to the time difference in which the sound is received in each ear. In keeping with your wisdom and patience, you are one who listens to multiple sides of a situation before you judge what is true.

Third Eye

One of the most striking features of an owl is its eyes. Owls can see in three dimensions and have binocular vision like humans, but unlike humans, their eyes are not eyeballs: they are cylindrical and completely immobile. To compensate, an owl can turn its head approximately 270 degrees from right to left and almost completely upside down. If you don’t understand something at first glance, you will turn it over and examine it from as many different angles as it takes until you do. A possible downside is that you are so focused on understanding details that you miss the big picture. Not only do you view things from a different perspective, but you use your inborn filters to see through various layers and may even be able to see different light spectrums and into the spirit world.

Crown

For you, dream time can be particularly potent. If you aren’t already lucid dreaming, you might want to try practicing it. In some cultures, the owl represents magic, prophecy, and reincarnation. It may be that you have memories of a previous life, and through meditation, you may be able to trigger memories of that life or find clarity. One of the most striking characteristics of an owl is the disklike shape of its face, which the owl can alter using facial muscles so that it acts like a radar dish funneling sound to its ears. Try using these attributes to focus and develop your own radar by visualizing your own face as that of an owl.
