SWAN

swan

Swans are one of those creatures whose very image brings up thoughts of love, beauty, and grace. Considered by some to be one of the most ancient of power animals, swans have been the inspiration of bards, musicians, and even the ballet for ages. Like in the story of “The Ugly Duckling,” swans represent transformation and the ability to find your inner beauty and to see the hidden beauty of others. Like crows and many other birds, swans will remember humans who have been nice to them and as well as those who have not. While trumpeter and tundra swans are native to North America, mute swans are not; they were imports from Europe during the mid-1800s to ornament large estates, city parks, and zoos. Fugitives from these captive immigrants formed breeding populations and now live in the Northeast, mid-Atlantic, Great Lakes, and Pacific Northwest.

Key Attributes

Inner grace and beauty, balance, self-esteem, intuitive ability, personal commitment, love, music, poetry, transformation, and letting go of childhood pain.

Chakra Interpretations

Root

Swans live in different habitats depending on the species, but what they all have in common is water. Living near water or spending time on the water is essential to you. Most likely, your preferred home life consists of two loving parents raising children together in a supportive environment. Another aspect of the swan speaks of their tendency to be grumpy and honk and chase away anyone who comes too close to their territory. You are very protective of your home and family, and you might be the person on your street who yells at the neighborhood children or dogs to stay off your lawn.

Sacral

If you had a difficult childhood or have a negative self-image, swan energy is telling you to let go of past pain and acknowledge all that you have overcome. Beauty comes from your inner strength, and those difficult times are long past. It is also a reminder that we all go through transformations throughout our lives, and we should strive to accept those changes with dignity. It might be that you are leaving your college years and entering the business world, which requires a different wardrobe. You might be entering your crone years (even if you are not a woman) and leaving your youth behind. Regardless of your transformation stage, the important thing is to do it with grace and style!

Solar Plexus

Even though it is one of the largest aquatic birds, the graceful swan barely leaves a wake and speaks to your ability to carry yourself with poise. Even if you are physically larger than others around you, no matter where you go, you project elegance. Another aspect of swans is that, though beautiful and graceful, they can be a little ill-tempered. They hiss and attack anything or anyone that enters their territory or comes near their eggs or babies. You might be the prettiest or most handsome person in the room, and people may have a perception of you because of that external physical appearance, but don’t let them forget that you are perfectly capable of defending yourself and those you love. At the same time, don’t expect an outer beauty to be your only virtue. You still need to treat people with the respect you desire for yourself.

Heart

Swans are monogamous and will stay with one partner for many years, sometimes mating for life. They are very protective and affectionate with each other. When they are courting, they will bow toward each other and curve their necks to form the classic image of a heart. When you are in a relationship, most likely you are very protective of your partner and never tire from romantic expressions of love, be it a candlelight dinner, a walk on the beach, or a spontaneous slow dance in the kitchen. Showing your partner love and affection feeds your soul and keeps your love alive. If you are not in a relationship, this love could be for children, companion animals, or even work or a creative project. The key message here is whomever or whatever you give your heart to, they will have it completely.

Throat

A swan’s long neck is beautiful and symbolic of grace and beauty. Swan in this chakra says you have no problem speaking your mind or speaking up for someone or something dear to you. When you communicate, you do so with eloquence and style. The term swan song comes from the mistaken belief that a mute swan only sings just before dying as a final act of beauty. Today it has come to mean a last creative expression or final performance. If you connect with swan in this chakra, ask yourself if it is time for you to give your swan song performance and move on to something new.

Third Eye

Just like how they leave virtually no wake while swimming, swan energy says you can enter the land of the unconscious without leaving a wake as well. When you approach the realm of Spirit, you do so from a place of honor and beauty. If this has been a challenge for you, just as the ugly duckling was able to transform its physical self, the swan is telling you that you can transform your intuitive self as well.

Crown

Living a life of grace doesn’t mean just on the physical plane, it also means showing grace with your spiritual existence as well. Some believe that we are humans searching for a spiritual experience. Others believe we are spirits learning how to have a human experience, and still others think it is a combination of the two, that we shouldn’t think of them as separate. Regardless of which concept is real, the challenge is to maintain grace on the journey. The swan is letting you know that your connection with Spirit is divine, and by surrendering to that beauty, you will find peace and tranquility.
