Chapter Sixteen

Luma and Timir left Nani and returned to the back yard. Even with the help of Timir’s flame, it took trip after trip to carry all Luma’s stuff to her bedroom.

Luma stared at the mountain of toys and books and clothes and stuffed animals on her rug and sighed. “It’s going to take ages to put everything back and it’s almost time for dinner!”

“I will do it,” Timir said.

He sucked in a deep, deep breath, his cheeks filling and filling with air, and then he let out a ginormous whoosh of purple flame, so big it covered the entire room.

The toy box lid banged open; the cups and saucers, jumprope, and dinosaurs flew inside.

Books slid onto the bookshelves.

The dolls returned to the doll’s house.

The stuffed animals gathered in a pile.

Luma’s clothes slotted onto their hangers and neatly folded into their drawers.

Her pillow and blankets settled over her bed.

The stack of board games found their lids and stacked away into the cupboard—each with a die from the purple cup.

And finally, the rosettes floated onto the shelf.

“I will do this one,” Luma said, holding up the music box. She carefully positioned it back where it had been before and grinned.

After dinner and a bath and a goodnight kiss and hug from Mom, Luma and Timir snuggled under the covers.

“What a long day,” Luma said. “I don’t think I’ll be setting my alarm for tomorrow … should we watch some more bubbles before we sleep?”

Timir eagerly nodded.

Luma pressed down on the heart charm.

“There you are trying to catch water from the hose!” Luma giggled.

“And you, waiting for me flying,” Timir said.

“There’s us on a walk—remember that other puppy you met?”

“And Mom … what is she doing?” Timir asked, pointing one dragon claw at another bubble.

“I think she’s giving you an extra slice of cake!”

The last of the bubbles faded. Timir yawned and burrowed under the duvet, nestling next to Luma’s legs.

Luma’s eyes began to blink and blink … just as they closed, she saw one last bubble float by. Inside, Luma and Timir were lying on the trampoline, gazing up at the passing clouds, Timir’s dragon claw wrapped inside Luma’s hand.

Luma smiled and fell asleep.
