Combining Approaches

Sketching approaches can be combined to create a finished drawing. We’ll use this process throughout the demonstrations in Chapter 3, where we’ll work up a structural sketch, then combine it with another sketching/drawing approach, either by adding values or with contour drawing.

Make a Structural Sketch

Work up a structural sketch of the subject with attention to accurate proportions and placement of features. At this stage don’t add any additional line work.

Combined With Another Drawing Approach

Use the structural sketch as a guide for the placement of the finished line work. In this example, the structural sketch combines with values to create the finished drawing.
