Hats and Headgear

Though they cover the head, hats can take on a shape of their own that is not molded to the actual shape of the head. It is good to draw the foundation of the shape of the head before adding the details of the headgear to your figure drawing. This is especially important so you can accurately proportion the height of the person and the facial features, ensuring that the measurements of the height do not include the height of the top of the headgear and ensuring that the eyes are placed correctly on the face.

Sketch the structure of the hat in its entirety to ensure the accuracy of the drawing. The structure along with the values added to the top portion of the hat create its cylindrical form.
