In this treat, turmeric adds a light, peppery heat to the chocolate. You may want to add only half the turmeric and adjust to taste. Refrigerated, in a closed container, these will keep for several days—but they won’t last that long!

½ cup or 4 ounces dark chocolate, broken into chunks
½ teaspoon grated orange zest
⅓ teaspoon dried turmeric
8 dried figs
1. Line a baking sheet with waxed paper.
2. To melt chocolate: Use a double boiler or place chocolate in a light, nonplastic bowl over a pot of lightly steaming water. Stir constantly until chocolate is melted. Remove from water bath.
3. If you prefer, place chocolate in small microwave-safe bowl or cup. Cover with waxed paper and heat in microwave on high power for 30 second intervals or until chocolate is almost melted. Stir until smooth.
4. To the melted chocolate, add orange zest and turmeric.
5. Hold one fig by the stem and dip into melted chocolate until the bottom half is covered. Repeat with remaining figs and chocolate.
6. Set figs on prepared baking sheet until chocolate hardens. You can put the figs in the refrigerator to speed up hardening, especially if you’re making this during the summer months.
Health Tip 101: Dark chocolate contains flavonoid, an antioxidant which helps protect the body from damage. The flavonoid also aids in reducing insulin resistance by helping cells to respond to insulin appropriately. But remember, a little goes a long way.
