DAY 2
44 MILES

START TIME: 4:15 AM   images   END TIME: 9:15 PM

Jen got over her first major mountains today (besides Katahdin)—White Cap and Chairback—and made it through another big chunk of the 100 Mile Wilderness. She has TONS of black fly and mosquito bites on her scalp and behind her knees, but the rest of her body is holding up pretty well and she’s in VERY good spirits. We brought her an enormous BBQ sandwich from Spring Creek BBQ in Monson and she scarfed it down. Our friend Melissa hiked in to give Jen some company during the mid-day stretch while I tried to help a dad and two sons from Freeport (home of L.L. Bean) find their wife/mom around Katahdin Iron Works. Two hours later they did reconnect, so that was a happy ending. Warren hiked in at dusk and helped Jen to get into camp safely. She tweaked her ankle right before bed, but we’re hoping it won’t prove to be a problem.

ANIMAL SIGHTINGS: Melissa and I saw a moose this morning on our way to Katahdin Iron Works Road and Warren saw one while he was driving the other way around in his car. We saw an enormous snapping turtle, maybe 15 pounds, on our way in to the last rendezvous of the evening.
