Today was pretty tough for Jen.
She wiped out coming down Crocker Mountain this morning and cut her knee up a little bit, then she fell a few minutes later when she was hiking with Melissa. She got to the first road crossing a few minutes late and was upset about the falls but in good spirits overall. While she was eating chocolate donuts and drinking hot tea, she said, “Maine’s trying to EAT me!”
She was dragging a little the rest of the day because of the falls and the sleep deprivation since she only got 3-4 hours of sleep the first night, and 5-6 hours the other three, but she made it over Spaulding Mountain, and down to ME 4 (Rangeley) where she had pizza and Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Butter Cup ice cream for dinner (she ate ALMOST the whole pint). Melissa hiked the last 8.5 miles with her and she hit the sack as soon as she got in, so she managed a solid 7 hours of sleep. Don’t tell her I said this, but I think it was the first time I’ve ever heard her snore. Her left shin is bothering her, but we’re hoping she’ll put in another solid day tomorrow and make it to Grafton Notch.
ANIMAL SIGHTINGS: Jen saw another moose yesterday—a mooseling—and I forgot to mention she had seen a moose the day before, in addition to the momma grouse. Loons serenaded us to sleep last night, and they sounded beautiful.
