START TIME: 5:06 AM END TIME: 10:10 PM
This was Jen’s biggest day on the trail, mileage-wise, since she put up 56 the first day. She woke up and left County Road 519 and hiked 11.9 miles to Sunrise Mountain. If you’ve read Jen’s book, you know that this is where she came across the suicide victim. When Jen hiked in 2008, she wanted to stop at the Pavilion on top of the mountain (where she found the body) and pray. I assumed she’d want to do the same thing this time, but she had assumed that we would meet at the parking lot of the pavilion and not the pavilion itself. She was pretty shaken when she reached the top because she had wanted to prepare mentally in the parking lot and hadn’t had a chance to do that since all the food, drinks, and supplies were with us at the pavilion. It was the sort of simple misunderstanding that happens when one person is hiking 45-50 miles a day and the other is trying to intuit things to make life easier.
I thought it might ruin Jen’s mood for the rest of the day, but she was in a much better place at the next road crossing. She and Steve pounded out fast miles throughout the day. So fast, in fact, that she reached Delaware Water Gap a good hour and a half early. She decided to keep hiking, so she and Melissa, grabbed a couple slices of pepperoni pizza each and hiked another 7 miles to PA 191. While they were hiking, I was able to take a shower at the Presbyterian Church of the Mountain. I was also able to grab a homemade strawberry rhubarb pie from the pie shop in Delaware Water Gap (which is a town, not a river) and a second pepperoni pizza for Jen’s and Mel’s second dinner of the evening.
