ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

My thanks to Ann Treistman and Aurora Bell of The Countryman Press who considered my book worth updating and reissuing in an expanded form. Aurora Bell deserves extra credit for her patience and informed editorial skills throughout the revision process.

As I noted in the first edition of this book, two of my most influential teachers deserved credit for my continued in-depth interest in architecture: The late Paul Westcott who introduced the history of architecture to The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania; his course was unique in secondary schools. Also, the late Columbia professor Eugene Raskin, my mentor and friend, whose many insights resonated with me as a young graduate student of architecture.
