Christmas 1865 was a bad day for livestock, as the sprawling Union Stock Yards opened, all beasts on the lookout. All that’s left now is the imposing limestone gate (moment of silence). While cattle around the country breathed a collective sigh when the Yards closed, this area headed south afterward and is still in recovery.
