How often do we
take the Holy One of Israel
for granted
assume he will work
according to
our ill-informed dictates?
Assumptions are easy
but they’re frequently
a mistake.
Remember the Triumphal Entry
the expectation that King Jesus
would wipe out Rome
with a mighty wave of power
and inaugurate a newer
kinder, earthly kingdom?
Of course Messiah
had something else in mind
and the crowd’s Hosannas
boisterous as they were
and smattered with blessings
merely paved the way
for disappointment.
Wailing waited
in the wings.
Assuming had blinded them
to the truth of the moment:
The triumphal entry
did not mark
the beginning of the end
for Rome
but the end of the beginning
of God’s Kingdom
one not of this world, at all
but of the heart.
So, come,
Son of The Highest
you of infinite surprises.
Take your seat
on the throne
of our lives.
