Duo Kite Beads

This striking duo-colored geometric composition produced by folding a single square epitomizes the magic of origami. So simple. So clean. So attractive!

1. If using a two-colored sheet, begin with the major color side up. Valley-fold in half, edge to edge, both ways, unfolding after each. Rotate 45 degrees.

2. Valley-fold the top and bottom corners to meet at the center where the creases cross.

3. Turn over, left to right.

4. Valley-fold in half, bottom edge to top. Unfold, returning the edge to the bottom.

5. Valley-fold in half, corner to corner. Rotate 90 degrees clockwise.

6. Mountain –fold corners A and B in half. Valley-fold corner D to lay upon A, and corner C to lay upon B. Look ahead at the next step for the shape.

7. Valley-fold the long edge of flap A to align with the vertical center. Unfold. Repeat behind with flap B.

8. Open the left flap and squash-fold to center. Repeat behind. Look ahead at the next step for the shape.

9. Valley-fold the bottom square corner of the top layer up. Repeat behind.

10. (A) Using a needle, pierce the top corner to make a small hole for the insertion of an eye pin. (B) Open the paper from the bottom.

11. (A) Apply paste and insert the eye pin through the hole in the top of the model. (B) Close the model. (C) Keep the paper closed and flat with a small clamp, paperclip, or a clothespin. To prevent the clamp from making dents in the model, place small squares of thin card between the jaws of the clamp and the paper. Allow the glue to dry.

12. When dry, valley-fold the tall triangular form on the front in half, right to left.

13. Valley-fold the bottom left and right corners up.

14. Apply paste and valley-fold the topmost left layer to the right. Look ahead for the shape.

15. Repeat steps 12 through 14 on the left.

16. Clamp or apply a gentle weight and let the glue dry.
