AUGUST 30
Sing with Heart
Ephesians 5:18-20
THE BIBLE RECORDS PEOPLE singing to God as early as when the people of Israel crossed the Red Sea and praised Him for their deliverance (see Exodus 15). Nothing touches the human heart deeper than music. This is never more true than when a group of Christians have gathered to sing heartily unto their Lord. Many a cold heart on skid row has melted as the strains of some old hymn lingered in the dark streets and back alleys surrounding a gospel mission. When congregations sing the praises of the King, even the demonic hosts stand at attention. Remember the words of the beloved hymn “When Morning Gilds the Skies”: “The powers of darkness fear, when this sweet chant they hear: May Jesus Christ be praised!”
Such moving melodies hold out a warm welcome to strangers, comfort to the broken, refreshment to the lonely, and affirmation to the discouraged. Great music from God’s people instructs and reproves, blesses and relieves.
These magnificent lyrics deserve to be memorized and sung spontaneously back to our Lord with faces lifted heavenward. But we’re also to sing them to each other. Remember Paul’s admonition?
Be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
EPHESIANS 5:18-20
Is your heart filled with gratitude and praise today? Does that praise erupt into songs of worship like Moses and the Israelites? I urge you not to sit silent in worship when you gather with God’s people. Open your mouth and offer your sacrifice of praise to the Lord with your lips. Sing jubilantly, sing heartily to the Lord! Don’t hold back. Let it out!
