The Early Genovese School

The portolani of the Genovese School (1300-1588) in this presentation (Maps p. 18, 20, 22, 24 and 26) were directly influenced by the pioneering 13th century work. In turn they substantially influenced the 14th century Viennese and 16th century Portuguese, Spanish and Italian schools. The corners of Maps 5 and 6 are decorated with popular patron saints of Venice, including St Nicholas and St Lucia. Two anonymous Genovese maps of around 1500 (Maps p. 66 and 68) were drawn by the same map maker using inks similar to those used by the Japanese at about the same time.
