Portolani during this period
Portolani (such as Maps, p. 42, 44, 46, 48, 50, and 52) from the early part of the 15th century might well have been available to the older Pinzón, Cabot, Columbus, Vespucci and explorers after them. For del Canto, the younger Pinzón, Vasco da Gama, Ponce de León and subsequent navigators, many improved maps (such as in Maps, p. 54, 56 and 58) may have been available. The explorers active after the second half of the 15th century would have seen maps (p. 60 and 62) with even more detail. The famous maps of Columbus (Map, p. 62) and of Juan de la Cosa (Map, p. 64) are mentioned in the text above |
