He then sailed for two months across the Pacific before landing in the Philippines, where he bartered with friendly natives, some acting as navigational guides through the archipelago. He documented his sightings and provided very valuable information for future Europeans to visit the area. He sailed west across the Indian Ocean, swung in a wide loop around the southernmost point of Africa (Cape Agulhas) and turned north to return to Plymouth. There, he was immediately greeted as a national hero. A few months after his return to Plymouth, Drake was knighted. He died at sea in 1596.
