whereas Hudson went the furthest west, into the vast bay he soon realized was not the Pacific. His fourth voyage traveled beyond Davis’s own exploration up Davis’ Strait. Both English and Dutch claims to North American lands were advanced by the explorations of Hudson. An English company paid for his first voyage, but his second was for the Dutch East India Company. Dutch claims on the territory would include the area that became New Amsterdam, and then New York City. It began with Hudson’s second voyage when he sailed up the river that would eventually be named for him to the area of present day Albany.
