The Marseille School Maps on p. 180, 198 and 210 are of the Marseille School (1590-1672). They show the marked influence of the school at Messina (1537-1620) and in turn they influenced the Paris School (1661-1751). Five parchment sheets were used in 1620 by Charlat Ambrosin for his map of the Mediterranean. It introduced inset maps-within-the-map, showing three details, each with a different compass orientation: Malta (in the lower right), Sicily and the North African coast. Interiors, such as that of Tunis, are exceptionally detailed for the time. |
