Thunder and lightning go together. Lightning is electricity that comes from thunderstorms.

If you hear thunder and see flashes of lightning, stay away from the windows. Forget about your TV, computers, or anything else that uses electricity. Lightning may hit the outside lines that lead into your house.

Water conducts electricity, so don’t wash your hands or take a shower. If you’re swimming, get out of the water fast and take shelter. But be careful where the shelter is. Metal is also a good conductor of electricity. So don’t stand under metal sheds, roofs, or bleachers.

Also stay away from trees. A good rule is to check out how tall the nearest tree is and to stay twice that far away from it.

Head to an open area and crouch down. Keep your feet together, and put your hands over your ears to protect them from the noise.

Even though lightning bolts are only an inch wide, each year they injure and kill more people than lions, cobras, and tigers!
