At school they make fun of me for being a virgin. I used to be proud of it. Now I feel embarrassed. I don’t want to do something I’ll be sorry for later. But I don’t want to be the prude either.
Isabel
Dear Isabel,
Many people today will tell you, “If it feels good, do it.” But God has a different message. He tells you to save this special gift for marriage.
Today the results of promiscuous sex are obvious: AIDS, herpes, HPV (human papilloma virus), pregnancy, abortion, depression. Did you know that teens make up 10% of our population but they acquire 20–25% of all STD’s (sexually transmitted diseases)? Or that one in five children over age 12 tests positive for herpes type 2 for which there is no cure?
God’s laws aren’t there to make life hard for you. They are there for a reason. In 3 John 11, John tells us, “Do not imitate what is evil but what is good.” Fill your life with good things like friendships, fun activities, family, church and volunteering.
Chances are good that some of the people who make fun of you are already infected with things that can’t be cured. They might even be passing these incurable diseases around without even knowing it. So feel good about your choice and try to hang around with others who share your values.
