Date: June 27, 2022

Lead Officer Name: Detective Martina Carillo-Hughes

Case Status: Open

Incident Type: Homicide

Narrative:

At 11:46 p.m. on Monday, June 27, 2022, I was dispatched to 7 Deadnettle Drive to investigate a homicide. First responders were on scene upon my arrival. The next-door neighbor, Nora Christie (a minor, age 16), who resides at 9 Deadnettle Drive, initially called 911 to report having heard a single gunshot. The mother, Tara Christie, stated she woke to the sound of a scream, followed by a single gunshot, and went next door to investigate and found homeowner Ginger Mallowan alone. Miss Mallowan’s son, Benson Mallowan, was lying faceup in the backyard, with a stab wound in his chest.

Ginger Mallowan reported that a masked intruder entered the house at approximately 11:30 p.m., waking her when she heard a disturbance in the kitchen. Through the open door of the back patio, she saw the killer and Benson scuffle in the backyard, then she screamed for them to stop. According to Miss Mallowan, a gunshot went off and Benson dropped to the ground. The intruder retreated on foot across the backyard, at which point Miss Mallowan attempted to revive Benson but was unsuccessful. Emergency responders pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Upon my arrival, I observed Miss Mallowan composed but unable to give a physical description of the intruder. No other witnesses saw anything. The victim was residing at the house due to marital problems with his wife, Sloane Mallowan. During my interviews with the victim’s family and neighbors, I learned there had been previous sightings of an unknown masked individual acting suspiciously in the vicinity.

Further ballistics will be used to confirm where the gun was fired from. Both Miss Mallowan and the victim were checked for gunshot residue, both of which came back positive. However, this remains inconclusive due to Miss Mallowan’s contact with the victim post-mortem. Crime scene investigators retrieved the bullet from a nearby magnolia tree, and ballistics determined it was a .45 Colt.

Initial autopsy reports propose the knife to be a standard kitchen blade, about 2 inches wide. Neither the gun nor the knife were recovered at the crime scene. The perpetrator is considered armed and dangerous.
