If only Logan Fox had known how close he was. The killer had breezed right past him, almost knocking shoulders with the massive ex-cop. If he had been an inch closer, would he have been caught? He doubted it – Logan was too wrapped up in the scene below, his gaze fixed firmly on his handiwork. It actually increased his pride.
The nearby reporter had also surprised him. The killer knew all there was to know about his own crime scene, but what he didn’t expect was to have his very own killer nickname. It seemed he was now known as the Doctor, and he didn’t hate it. He thought it adequately described the work he was doing, even if it did miss the whole meaning behind it.
But who was he to comment? He had come here to dump a body, and it just so happened he was almost caught in the act. The riverside was dark and quiet when he’d first arrived, and the killer had not taken his time in hauling the body from the car. When he was mere feet from the river itself, the jogger had come out of nowhere as just a silhouette with the streetlights behind her. At that point, the killer hadn’t yet been seen, but he did know he had to either abandon the job or take the jogger out quickly. He’d made his decision not to take the risk and had gotten out of there right away.
As it turned out, that was for the best.
The street was getting noisy. Logan Fox was nearby, starting to make a move away from the scene. That was good, the killer thought as he felt the growing distance between them both. The girl was dead, and despite the fact Logan might not know everything just yet, they were both heavily invested in this. The killer tried to imagine what it would be like if he saw the body – how much of a crumbling mess he would become. The thought warmed him, making all this worth it. Making it worth dragging this out for as long as possible.
That was what he planned to do.
Deciding not to further the risk of being seen, the killer took one last look at the panic he’d created – reveled in the fearful words of the reporter as she told his story to a camera – and made his way back to the car.
There was plenty more where that came from.
