SHE HAD HER RECURRING nightmare again. As always, she couldn’t seem to wake up from it. She ran from menacing laughter trailing behind her – chasing her. A voice kept calling her, taunting her. She tried to run faster, but complete darkness surrounded her.
She couldn’t figure out where she was, but she continued to run away from the laughter that kept following her. She had to get away before it caught her. Her heart pounded violently against her chest. She gasped for air. Her breathing became raspy; she couldn’t catch her breath. Her lungs were on fire, screaming for relief. Her ribs ached, but she couldn’t stop, she had to keep going. The moonless sky offered no help. The darkness was absolute.
She kept telling herself that she could not stop. She stumbled along in the darkness, refusing to give up. The laughter was not far behind her. She desperately wanted to stop and catch her breath, but she couldn’t risk that the laughter would catch up with her. Her heart was racing, as if it would beat out of her chest at any moment. She started to fear that she was running in circles, but she couldn’t be, or could she? She began to panic, but forced herself to remain calm. This was not the time to be hysterical.
The night fell silent. The laughter seemed to have stopped following her. Suddenly he was here, standing directly in front of her. Her heart stopped. Was he taunting her again, or had he come to be with her? Was he truly hers now? She had been waiting for this moment all her life. In the next instant he turned black, as black as his heart. He revealed his true self. The others join him, taunting her with their lies. The spiders came, covering the men. She heard their muffled screams. Instead of helping this time, it was her turn to taunt them with her laughter.
She woke up with a start, covered in sweat. When would these nightmares stop haunting her? She pulled herself out of bed and headed towards the bathroom. A cool shower would help clear her mind.
The cool water felt like tiny shards of glass hitting her body. This was just what she needed to banish the nightmare from her mind today. After her shower, she walked over to her closet to get dressed.
Once dressed, she stood in front of the mirror looking at her image. Her hair shimmered in an effortless wave that her beautician had highlighted to perfection.
At least she still looked damn good. Her daily workouts helped to keep her in top physical shape. To this day, no one knew her actual age, and she planned to keep it that way.
The black suit she wore today fit her like a glove. She slipped on a pair of Christian Louboutin Stilettos to complete the ensemble. Giving herself a final glance in the mirror, she smiled at her reflection. Yep, she still had it.
She planned on running into him today. Nothing in this world could stop her from showing up at his dad’s wake. She wanted his jaw to drop when he saw her walk into the room. She wanted, no needed, him to regret leaving her for another woman. Having no shame, she wanted to rub it in his face what he could have had.
Not seeing anything out of place, she walked out to the kitchen. Hilda, her housekeeper, should have breakfast started by now.
