Chapter 11

“APRIL, ARE YOU SURE you can’t make it at all tonight?”  April LaRue was one of Brandi’s new girls, and she had her doubts when she hired her, but the young woman was so damned pretty that it was hard to turn her away.  Plus, Brandi felt sorry for the young lady.  It couldn’t be easy being a single mother these days.  With April canceling this close to her date, there was no way she could find a replacement.  She would have to fill in tonight.  She had to keep her clients happy.

She heard April talking in the background but had inadvertently tuned her out, “I understand your child has to come first.  I promise.  You’re sure you don’t have anyone that could watch him?”

Brandi drummed her fingernails on the desktop while she listened to April’s list of excuses.  Brandi didn’t see this working out.  She had already missed three nights this month, and her clients liked their regulars.  This was a business, and she had to run it that way.  She couldn’t allow her feelings for the girls get in the way.

Looking at the clock, she knew if she was going to fill in for April, she needed to get ready.  “April, look I need to get going.  Call me when you are up to working again, and I will try to arrange something.”

Brandi hung up the phone and doubted she would hear from the girl again.  Maybe her heart just wasn’t into it.  Before resigning herself to filling in, she flipped through her Rolodex to see if Eve was free tonight.  She only wanted to work on occasion, and maybe she would get lucky, “Eve, this is Brandi Vidrine.  I’m so glad I caught you.  Look, I know this is short notice, but I was wondering if you were busy tonight.  I had a girl cancel at the last minute.”

Brandi gave Eve the address of where she would be meeting the client and the particulars.  Brandi was glad she didn’t have to fill in for April, now she was free to do what she originally planned.

Lately, Brandi has considered branching out to New Orleans as well.  If she did, it would keep her busier than ever.

If she didn’t hurry, she would definitely be late.  Traffic wasn’t bad until she hit the interstate, and then it was bumper to bumper.  Ever since the influx in population, traffic had been a nightmare here.  It seemed that over half the people that lived in New Orleans before the hurricane now lived here.  Most people decided not to rebuild and just moved on with their lives.
