Most of the pictures in this book came from the many individual contributors — kind-hearted Australians named in the Acknowledgements who provided photo albums, scrapbooks, and loose photos from their private collections — especially Trish Murrell, who lent the author the priceless photo album of her ancestor Major Thomas Bird.

The remainder came from original World War I first-edition publications produced during the war itself, and the author gives thanks to those publications for the use of these photos many of which are 100 years old. The author is also especially grateful to the late Stuart Dyson, who gave the author many first-edition World War I publications (published during the war itself or just after the war) full of pictures, for which the author gives thanks including: The Kia-ora Cooee. The Official Magazine of the ANZAC Forces in Egypt, Palestine, Salonika & Mesopotamia 1917–1918. Australia in the Great War: the story told in pictures (a magazine series in eight parts raising funds for the Australian soldiers Repatriation Fund (Commonwealth Government and Cassell & Co, 1915–1919); Australia in Palestine (Angus & Robertson, 1919); The Times: History and Encyclopaedia of the War. Part 187 Vol.15 The Capture of Jerusalem (March, 1918); also Revolt in the Desert, by T.E. Lawrence (George H. Doran, New York, 1926). The author also thanks Elyne Mitchell, the daughter of General Sir Harry Chauvel, for copies of photographs she kindly provided. The author has also used photographs from his extensive personal collection of archival photographs, which he has acquired over the last 40 years.

Most of these pictures were scanned and improved by the highly skilled and dedicated Avalon photographer and historical scholar John Stone.

The author also thanks the Australian War Memorial for the use of any of the above images published during World War I that may also now be in the AWM collection (where this was known, the author has published the accession number with the photograph).

Every effort has been made to trace copyright, and if advised of any omissions, the author will correct these in later editions.
