Week 16: Take charge of your happiness
“A man is as miserable as he thinks he is”
~Seneca the Younger
Out of every goal human beings want to attain, happiness is usually the greatest, and chances are it’s the one that drives you the most. The prime motivator in everything that people do, no matter how selfless and noble it is, is happiness: we do things because they make us happy.
Whatever goals you have drawn up all probably have your happiness as their ultimate objective. As much as achieving external things can help fulfill that objective, the truth is that it isn’t the ultimate source of happiness. All of us know of someone who seemingly has everything but is miserable. You also probably know someone who is struggling but seemingly has an unending source of happiness.
That source, the true source of happiness, lies within. Nothing outside of you can truly fulfill you. Cultivating inner happiness will allow you to have boundless joy whatever the situation. It will allow you to weather the toughest times and to be truly content once you have reached your goals.
Weekly challenge:
Break yourself out of the belief that you will only be happy once you have achieved your goals, be they financial, relationship or career-oriented. Cultivate happiness from within: have a positive attitude and outlook on life. Discriminate between what is inside and what is outside your control – do the best you can to affect what you can while minimizing any bad effects of the things you can’t – not only will your happiness be unaffected by uncontrollable circumstances but your life will be so much better for it.
