Week 49: If you want to see change, be the one to make it happen
“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”
~Mohandas Gandhi
There’s probably a lot you can see around you and in the world as a whole that you think needs improvement. To begin with are probably things that affect you personally – aspects of your current situation that you think are not optimal or keep you down in some way. It’s easy to think that they are impossible for you to surmount and think that only through outside intervention can they change, but there is really no one but you who can effect change in your life.
There are probably also big societal issues that you may want to see change. It’s even easier to succumb to inaction here – the problems seem so much bigger than you. But it is through the action of individuals that society sees change. You need to realize that you too can be an agent of transformation and have the ability to change the world.
Weekly challenge:
Start effecting the change you want to see now. You already have this book, and there are thousands more that can give you the information you need to set your life in a positive direction. Shake off the spirit of defeatism about the world and start to take part in social and moral causes that you support. Take whatever role is best suited for you – even if it’s just being a helper or supporter on the sidelines, be proud of that because no cause would ever have succeeded if it wasn’t for people like you.
If you catch yourself ‘wishing’ or ‘hoping’ someone would act in a different way - such as being calmer, more organized, or speaking the truth - take the lead and demonstrate that behavior to them.
