This book began when the Johnston family, Anna, Don, and Ralph, brought James Johnston’s memoir to the attention of the New Brunswick Military Heritage Project. They generously provided copies of their father’s memoir, his service records, family photos, and many hours of their time answering questions. They also read early drafts of this book and offered valuable comments. Without them, Riding into War would never have been completed.
A special thanks is owed to Doug Knight for his assistance in obtaining photographs from the National Archives of Canada. Madeleine Trudeau, of the Canadian War Museum, and Robert Shindle, of the Steamship Historical Society of America, also helped with the photos. Rob Blanchard, of the University of New Brunswick’s Media Services, and Bill Hamilton and Jorge Sayat, of the UNB Arts Faculty computer centre, assisted with the reproduction of photos. Mike Bechthold, the New Brunswick Military History Project’s cartographer, provided the maps with speed and efficiency. Finally, the staff of Goose Lane Editions, especially Laurel Boone and Angela Williams, of the editorial department, and Julie Scriver and Paul Vienneau, of the art department, used their expertise to patiently mould the manuscript into the finished book.
