You decide you need to be more prepared before becoming a protester. You go to a workshop. There, you practice staying calm as people shout at you and spit on you.

You learn that if enough people are arrested, the jails fill up. When the jails are full, officials have no choice but to give in to the demands. If you are arrested, you need to stay in jail as long as possible before getting bailed out.

The SNCC is asking for “Freedom Riders.” In 1960, the Supreme Court ordered interstate buses and stations to desegregate. So far, the South has ignored the court’s ruling. People of all ages and races are needed to test the segregation rules. You know it could be violent. Maybe you should start with a lunch counter sit-in instead.
