Leave the Hôtel de Sully via the rue St-Antoine exit and turn right. The church of St-Paul-St-Louis will be on your left after a short distance. Located on one of the Marais’ main streets, this impressive church was commissioned by the Jesuits, and the church’s foundation stone was laid by Louis XIII himself in 1627. Completed in 1641, its design was influenced by the Gesu church in Rome. The neighbouring Lycée Charlemagne was originally a convent attached to the church, it became a school after the Jesuits were expelled from France in 1763. The 60-metre (180-foot) dome was a model for the later Dôme church at Les Invalides. The church was damaged during the Revolution, and
most of its treasures were also removed. Delacroix’s masterpiece Christ in the Garden of Olives can, however, still be seen near the entrance.

Built between 1475 and 1507, stylistically it straddles the late Gothic and early Renaissance periods. Despite some large windows the whole building still seems to have the air of a fortified castle, which is basically what it was.
Occupied by various important aristocratic families, including the Bourbons and the Guise, it is where Cardinal de Pellevé is supposed to have died of rage when he heard that the Protestant King Henri IV had
