in 1784. The name of the theatre was changed to Odéon with the arrival of a new company in 1797. The building was destroyed by a fire in 1807 and rebuilt later that year in its original design by the architect Jean-François Chalgrin. The auditorium is a particularly impressive one, and contains a ceiling that was painted by André Masson in 1965. After World War II the theatre specialised in modern drama and was one of the best attended in Paris. Today, it hosts foreign-languages plays, including English ones.
