Jardin des Plantes
This is an area seldom visited by tourists, yet it is full of treasures, from
an ancient Gallo-Roman arena to one of the best shopping streets in
the city: rue Mouffetard. This delightful old street has a number of
open-air markets well known for their fresh produce. The area is also
home to Paris’ botanical gardens, the Jardin des Plantes, which were
established by two doctors for medicinal herbs during the reign of Louis
XIII. Parts of the area seem to have remained unchanged for centuries,
giving it a curiously timeless feel, but it also has some cutting-edge
architecture in the form of the Institute du Monde Arabe, which
overlooks the Seine near the historic islands.
