Trocadéro
This part of Paris, centred on the Place du Trocadéro, is one of the
most exclusive areas in the city. It is also known as Chaillot, a name
which comes from the village that used to stand here and that got
swallowed up by Paris in the 19th century. It was transformed into
grand avenues and noble mansions and is popular with embassies. The
area is also well known for its cafés and restaurants, and has some of
the city’s most fascinating museums, covering Asian art, contemporary
art and fashion. In fact, Avenue du Président Wilson has the highest
concentration of museums of any street in the city. Standing at the
heart of the district are the sweeping, symmetrical wings of the Palais
de Chaillot, which act as the imposing western end of the axis running
from the Ecole Militaire through the Eiffel Tower. The Palais’ hilly
position allows it magnificent panoramas of this part of the city and it is
also one of the best places from which to photograph the Eiffel Tower.
