Champs-Elysées
The Champs-Elysées is the most famous street in Paris, if not the
world. Wide and tree-lined, it forms the main section of the grand axis
that runs from the Louvre all the way to La Défense, a distance of 10
kilometres (6 miles). With its numerous shops, cafés and restaurants, the
area is one of the best places to shop in the city, as it is home to Avenue
Montaigne as well as the rue du Faubourg St-Honoré. The focal point of
the area is the Arc de Triomphe, the massive triumphal arch built at the
western end of the Champs-Elysées to celebrate Napoleon’s victories. At
the eastern end of the avenue is a cluster of grand buildings, the Grand
Palais and the Petit Palais, which nestle amidst the lovely Jardins des
Champs-Elysées and overlook the beautiful Pont Alexandre III, one of
the most beautiful bridges in the city. This is also home to the Palais de
l’Elysée, the official residence of the President of France.
