Rue la Fontaine
Metro: Michel-Ange-Auteuil
The rue la Fontaine runs through a fashionable part of Paris and contains some of the city’s most extraordinary early 20th-century architecture. No. 14 is Castel Béranger, or more commonly known as Castel Déranger (which means deranged), a stunning Art Nouveau apartment building designed by Hector Guimard using cheap materials to keep the costs as low as possible. Nicknamed the House of Devils because of its swirling figures, it established the architect’s reputation and he went on to design the iconic entrances for the Paris metro.
Consisting of 36 apartments, the building’s façade features redbrick, enamel tiles and red and white sandstone. The windows are arranged in a highly irregular pattern, while the metalwork is one of the building’s most beautiful and striking features, especially on the balconies and over the entrance. The painter Paul Signac lived here. There are a number of other examples of Guimard’s work on the street, including the Hôtel Mezzara at No. 60.
